Col. William Sparrow is Vice/Air Commander of the 187th Fighter Wing located at Montgomery Regional (Dannelly Field) Air National Guard Base, Ala. As the Vice Commander, he assists the Wing Commander in providing a combat ready force, comprised of approximately 1,000 personnel and equipped with the F-16C+ Fighting Falcon and the associated Expeditionary Combat Support Forces, to support the Expeditionary Air Force and additionally provides required guidance, resources, and other support to wing/group entities.
Prior to his current assignment, Colonel Sparrow was the 187th Operations Group Commander, where he was responsible for the training and readiness of all assigned members. Before assuming command of the Operations Group, he served as commander of the 100th Fighter Squadron, also located on Dannelly Field, where his responsibilities included oversight of all squadron level functions. Also, he maintains currency as a Mission Ready Instructor Pilot and Mission Commander in the F-16C+ Fighting Falcon.
Col. Sparrow, a native of New York City, N.Y., earned a Bachelor of Science in Finance from The College of New Jersey. He was commissioned through Officer Training School, Lackland AFB, Texas, as a distinguished graduate in 1985. Colonel Sparrow has deployed in support of Operations PROVIDE COMFORT, NORTHERN WATCH, and operations over Bosnia. In 1996, he was sent to Luke AFB, Ariz., to serve as an F-16 Replacement Training Unit (RTU) Instructor Pilot until 1999. Since joining the 187th Fighter Wing, Colonel Sparrow has deployed in support of Operation NOBLE EAGLE and several times in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM, in which he has logged over 100 combat missions and more than 450 combat hours. Colonel Sparrow has over 4400 operational hours in the F-16 Fighting Falcon.
